MANDALA IN ART THERAPY

Mandala is a geometric configuration of elements that are equidistant from the central point. This sacred schematic image used in Buddhism for centuries was introduced into modern psychotherapy by Carl Gustav Jung.
  • Mandala images are a reflection of our psychic reality, a symbolic representation of our inner world.
  • Unlike religious practices, mandalas in psychotherapy are not constructed in accordance with any strict rules. Rather they are created arbitrarily and freely, only led by our subconscious.
  • Mandala technique is used as a tool to gain complete understanding of one's true self.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SESSION
1
Introduction to the methodology
You don't need any formal art education or an ability to draw in order to build mandalas. This is an intuitive process. However it follows several important guidelines that are covered upfront.
2
Phrasing the inquiry
Using this method, you can "dig up" a certain topic that moves you and explore its state and your relationship and attitude towards it. Inquiries can relate to any aspect of life, from self-realisation and relationships to career and mission.
3
Building a mandala
Mandala drawing usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours, but you are not limited to this time and can complete your drawing later. The main condition of the process is complete immersion into the meditative process and release of all control.
4
Deciphering the mandala
Mandala's main objective is establishing a dialogue with ourselves, providing prompts, hints and directions. By analysing the image, we start questioning and exploring certain assumptions that lead us to the right answers.
